As you may be aware, psychiatric APRNs are now covered under the Medicaid prescribing exemption, eliminating the requirement to pursue prior authorization, an exemption psychiatrists have for prescribing atypical anti-psychotics and antidepressants. OAAPN worked very closely with the Ohio Council of Behavioral Health and Family Services Providers to pursue this exemption.  Many psychiatric APRNs have inquired how they can sign up to become an exempted prescriber. The Ohio Council of Behavioral Health and Family Services Providers and OAAPN staff have assisted OAAPN in clarifying the information below.

What is the process to sign up as an exempted psychiatric provider?

The Ohio Department of Medicaid (ODM) is currently getting confirmation from the Ohio Board of Nursing on which CNPs and CNSs who have board certification either as a psychiatric mental health NP, adult psychiatric mental health CNS or child-adolescent psychiatric mental health CNS. The Ohio Department of Medicaid will then cross check this list with their Medicaid provider list and manually add the designation to the Medicaid Information Technology System (MITs) enrollment file.  This list will then be shared electronically with the Medicaid Managed Care Companies.

At this time, it is still a behind the scenes manual process at Medicaid to designate these APRNs as exempted prescribers.  The ODM is developing an enrollment file process update that CNPs/CNSs will be able to use in the future, but it’s not available yet.  If you are experiencing issues or not being recognized as an “exempted” prescriber, you may call the MITS Provider Hotline at 800-686-1516 for assistance.  This is the best information we have for now.

If you need additional assistance, please call the MITs Provider Hotline at 1-800-686-1516.
