Question: A co-worker stated that there has been a new law passed that, since I am a certified FNP, I will no longer be able to work in an Emergency Room (ER) role. I’m wondering if this is true in Ohio? If so, has the law already been passed? Is anyone grandfathered in and/or how long will a certified FNP have to get their certification before they would be subject to losing their job?
Answer: No law or rule has been passed that states an FNP may not work in the ER. The Ohio Board of Nursing (OBON), in its quarterly Fall e-zine, Momentum, had an article regarding primary care and acute care APRN scope of practice. In this article the OBON opined that formally trained primary care APRNs should not be taking care of unstable patients unless they have formal education and national certification to do so. OAAPN has had initial conversations with the OBON as this opinion seems in conflict with the APRN Consensus Model, L.A.C.E., adopted by the OBON in 2013.
OAAPN is recommending that hospitals and freestanding ER’s do not disenfranchise their ER FNP APRNs until clarification has occurred. Additionally, the OBON did not know about the 2017 ENP certification from AANP, which has criteria for an FNP to become certified. Furthermore, they did not know that nationally, of ER’s with APRN’s on staff, the majority (78%) are FNPs. OAAPN will continue to publish updates as more information becomes available.
